About Us
A Journey of Story and Spirit: The Evolution of Canadian Indigenous Art
Canadian Indigenous Art is entering an exciting new chapter with our move to 78 Wharf St. in downtown Nanaimo. While our physical storefront is a fresh addition to the community, the journey behind it began over thirty years ago with founder Maike Marnet. Her personal passion for collecting—driven by a deep appreciation for authentic storytelling and one-of-a-kind pieces—has blossomed from a private collection into a lifelong mission to share these traditions with you.
Over the decades, Maike built an extensive collection of intricate masks, totem poles, original paintings, and jewelry. In 1999, she launched an online gallery to connect Coast Salish artists with collectors across North America, laying the groundwork for the physical destination we have become today.
Our move to this highly visible location in the heart of Nanaimo (tucked conveniently under Mon Petit Choux Cafe and Bakery) represents a commitment to being a welcoming, community-facing destination. We are stepping out from behind the screen to offer locals and visitors alike a chance to experience the beauty and significance of these works in person.
At its heart, the gallery exists to honor the traditions and cultural heritage behind every carving and canvas. We invite you to visit us and explore a space where art, history, and community meet.
