Board Governance Training with Deb McClelland

BOARD GOVERNANCE TRAINING

OVERVIEW
Back by popular demand -- Deb McLelland provides an overview of best practices in board governance to any and every non-profit board. Governance refers to the oversight of an organization. Best practices in governance means that a board ensures their optimal performance through the implementation of effective systems.

Deb’s several past visits to Nanaimo have put her in front of diverse board members and groups spanning arts & culture, social service, advocacy, sports, and philanthropic non-profits.

MODULES
The Rules
What is the board’s role in good governance? What are bylaws, policies, terms of reference and what do you do with them?
The Strategy
How do you handle your board’s year effectively and efficiently within volunteers’ limited time? We discover the board’s annual work plan, meeting agendas and strategic plan.
The Players
How do you find the right people for your board? We talk about the recruitment and development of all your directors, having effective committees, and the senior staff person’s annual performance review.
Complimentary Extras
Handouts may be emailed to each attendee for printing prior to the sessions.  Access to practical templates, exercises and examples is included to help kickstart the development of each board’s best practices.

DEB McCLELLAND
Over the years, Deb’s passion has been to assist boards in realizing their potential by travelling around the country teaching numerous workshops on the subject. Deb has served on many boards, including national and provincial boards, for over thirty-five years. She also worked as Executive Director at the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce for nineteen years, supporting her board of directors as they transitioned to a solid governance model. Within all these experiences, she came to realize that governance, when done right, could be fun and easy.  That is why she has developed templates, examples and exercises for boards to follow so that they can easily adopt what she calls the Seven Key Elements of Good Governance.

Deb has been recognized as Executive of the Year and Chamber of the Year by her provincial network and Executive of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce Executives of Canada. Most recently, she was appointed to the Council of Excellence by a panel of her peers across the country and appointed as Fellow of the BC Chamber of Commerce.
